The first inhabitant of Split was  emperor Diocletian, who built slavish villa about 30 000 square meters in this friendly bay around 293AD, where he withdrew after the abdication of Roman emperor.

Such past left it traces in the city every day life.The big city today is rich in history, with lively spirit of the youth and its particular Mediterranean charm, yet kept all Croatian warmth. Colonia Martia Julia Salona, is the name of the capital of the Roman province of Dalmatia. It originated in marine protected bay, next to river Jadro at the foot of mountain Kozjak.

Before the arrival of the Romans and Italics, there lived the  tribe of Delmati and Greek merchants .The size, the prosperity and splendor of the ancient city is attested by the imposing walls with tower sand gates,a forum with the temples, a theater, an amphitheater, as well as the unique structures of Episcopalian early Christian churches in the cemeteries where they are buried Salona Martyrs(Manastirine, Kapljuč, Marusinac).
